Many technologies are marketed as devices that unite humanity, yet create a false sense of connection and proximity. Breaking the Fourth Wall is a self-reflection piece about isolation through technology, highlighting the oxymoron of “spatial computing” within the envelope of the social experience. It is symbolic of strapping on a pair of the latest VR goggles whose digital light projections immerse the user at the expense of togetherness. The perforations at the top of the cube simulate the projection of dappled light through tree canopies, as a jab at the idea that digital technology could replace analog experiences. The user is trapped in a box of their own awareness, viewing themself in infinity, while others mockingly watch them from the outside through the broken fourth wall. Until we can break this wall tangibly, all of our technological tools are merely methods of isolation.
