Often more times than not, the harsh glare of a medical office engulfs you when you enter, burdening you with a bitter light that amplifies the feeling of unease and discomfort. When we interact with a space of such context, we often expect to be greeted perhaps with some level of comfort. Ultimately, in an effort to quell the blinding light, I designed a fixture that utilizes layered fabric to diffuse the cool-toned illumination typical of medical offices in a way that creates a glow that is less harsh on the viewer's eyes. Through sheer fabric and subtle colors, the light embodies not only comfort but also the fleeting nature of emotions, which shift with changing environments. Once you sit with this light and experience it, it is meant to offer you solace in a time where it may not be found elsewhere—a quiet refuge in an otherwise sterile space. Through this immersive experience, you are able to grasp the full effect of how visual softness can evoke intrinsic softness, bringing a sense of ease where it is least expected.
