Komorebi : The Japanese word for sunlight filtering through trees Born from a personal fear of the dark, komorebi is a nightlight designed to transform the unknown night into a soothing experience. Mimicking the shape of sunlight through trees, light is carved from shadow, transforming darkness into gentle speckles rather than intimidating forms. In contrast to the harsh glare of artificial lighting, komorebi places focus on the creation of shadow, softening the strain of brightness and unease of darkness through the image of nature. Though artificial light is uniquely beautiful, nothing offers greater comfort to the human spirit than the natural, warm light of the sun. The light of day banishes fear of the night, and the glare of the sun is softened through its interaction with life, bringing a sense of wholeness to the soul. Komorebi abstracts this idea on a smaller scale, tempering the brightness of a nightlight with etched acrylic panels in a circular projection, illuminated just enough to see the image of leaves, but not enough to create harsh shadows that haunt the dreams of children.
