Around the dinner table and flooding into the living room, we gather by candlelight to reminisce and hear stories of the past, moments of the present, and to laugh?the best medicine. The young with the elders, weaving connections in the fabric of our lives. Identities, each a compilation of our experiences, are beams of colorful, sorrowful, intricate and yet so simple, beautiful, bright lights. This lighting piece represents the interwoven relationships and experiences that make up my family identity. Directed LED light pushes hand-painted, multi-colored patterns through a water-filled glass to dance saturated hues of turquoise, honey-yellow, fuchsia, melon, and moss green on worn, cream drapery, reminiscent of movements, personalities, and spirits gathering. Each saturated hue of color represents each of my family members, from my aunts, uncles, cousins and grandmothers, all who gather every Sunday in my tightly packed dining room to share a warm communal meal and exchange comforting conversation. This beam casts the stories, loved ones, meals, memories, ancestors, emotions and feelings of my home in one place. A reminder of the cyclical traditions and rituals which uphold one's sense of self and community.
