My lighting design proposal, titled "Light is Like Water," draws inspiration from the vast oceans of my hometown, Lima, Peru. Throughout the pandemic, the inability to connect with one another or with nature accentuated a profound yearning to immerse oneself in the soothing embrace of water. While digital connectivity has since become more accessible, it often feels manufactured and artificial, lacking the organic essence of true connection. The ocean symbolizes a profound sense of unity, bridging countries, cultures, and humanity with nature. Similarly, light possesses a fluidity akin to water, capable of enveloping people and fostering an atmosphere conducive to interaction. In my design, I aim to capture the essence of this natural connection, infusing spaces with the gentle luminosity of light to evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony reminiscent of the ocean's embrace. To encapsulate the essence of this natural connection, I utilized a medium with similar fluid characteristics: fibers. Partnering with the Italian company Aquafil®, I incorporated their sustainable, repurposed yarn Econyl® into my design. This innovative material, crafted from discarded fishing nets and rug waste that once polluted our oceans, serves as a poignant reminder of our interconnectedness with water. Through the creation of a hand-woven LED lamp, I sought to capture the essence of light, water, and the profound connectivity of the ocean, thereby fostering an environment that encourages meaningful interaction and reflection.
