"Lucid Dreaming" recreates the moment when a person can feel themselves falling asleep at a party, the moment right before they drift off, when all the world seems to spin and they're perfectly comfortable laying on the couch, warm and happy, hearing the voices of the people they love around them. Peering through the paper into the light, through the layers of design, reveals tiny pinpricks of light. The rotating pattern on the surface of the light mimics the slow ebb and flow of surrounding conversations. Different colors reveal a different dimensionality to the surface design. The changing light pulls all the colors of the design together and apart again, revealing the perceptive quality of light, and of the human brain. The texture of the paper, especially the reds, echos the grainy surfaces on the backs of our eyelids, akin to light filtering through closed eyes. The floor orientation encourages the viewer to observe the installation as if looking through the eyes of a person sleeping in front of them, to see what they see as they fall asleep. This transparency conveys a sincerity to unite all observers via a universally shared intimate experience.
